Consumers Take the Lead in Shaping Cancer Care

The MPCCC introduced the Co-designed Consumer Leadership Program, now officially titled Lead from Lived Experience – Enhancing Cancer Care—at the recent CancerWISE education session for Monash Health cancer nurses.

The presentation highlighted the critical role of people with lived experience of cancer in driving improvements in research and care. It invited nurses to support and champion consumer leadership across the sector, fostering a stronger, more inclusive health system.

Program Highlights:

  • Launching 28 July as a six-month pilot
  • Involves 20 diverse participants from across Victoria
  • Co-designed to strengthen the consumer voice in cancer research and services
  • Aims to build leadership capability and system impact through lived experience

The next phase of the program, from late September to December, will see participants placed in cancer organisations and health services to gain hands-on experience contributing to real-world projects, strategy development, governance, and advocacy.

“This program is about shifting power and perspective – embedding the voices of those with lived experience at the heart of decision-making,” said Cassie Haynes, MPCCC consumer liaison coordinator.
